New study from the Pillow lab uncovers rotating neural trajectories during decision-making

In October 2020, the Pillow lab published their study “Prefrontal cortex exhibits multidimensional dynamic encoding during decision-making” in Nature Neuroscience in collaboration with Valerio Mante (ETH Zurich). Led by Mikio Aoi, who is now an assistant professor at the University of California, San Diego, this study challenges the traditional model of perceptual decision-making. By using novel analysis tools, they show how the prefrontal cortex dynamically encodes and integrates information about an upcoming decision, opening new perspectives on how the brain turns sensory information into action.

UPDATE: Nine Princeton researchers receive NIH BRAIN Initiative awards

Four Princeton University projects are among the 121 selected by the National Institutes of Health to receive an overall $219 million in funds related to the federal Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative. Launched in 2013, the BRAIN Initiative is a large-scale effort to push the boundaries of neuroscience research and equip scientists with insights necessary for treating a wide variety of brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, autism, epilepsy and traumatic brain injury.

NIH BRAIN Initiative Builds On Early Advances

The National Institutes of Health has announced funding for 110 new awards totaling $169 million for the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative, bringing the total 2017 funding investment for the program to $260 million. Maps of whole brains in action, the ability to identify thousands of brain cells at a time, and innovative brain scanners are just a few of the advances funded by the groundbreaking effort. In the past three years, research under the initiative has advanced so rapidly that this year many of the previously funded individual projects will receive expanded support to achieve the ambitious goals of the BRAIN Initiative.
